The Problem

Insomnia is defined as habitual sleeplessness or the inability to sleep. There is no question that there are times when you have trouble falling asleep or having a good night’s sleep every once in a while. However, insomnia is an entirely different ball of wax. It is an ongoing/chronic problem. You get very familiar with the ceiling in your bedroom – not fun. Insomnia literally disrupts your sleep patterns and you toss and turn and toss and turn and well you get the idea.

Insomnia causes what is commonly called sleep deprivation and as a result you are sluggish during day. Insomnia itself can cause physical and mental problems. People can attribute feeling moody, lack of energy and poor concentration all to insomnia.

There are a few different types of insomnia, based on their symptoms and origins.

Acute Insomnia

Typically, lasts no more than a couple of weeks and tends to create restless and unsettled sleep. It usually occurs as a result of stress or major life changes. It can be triggered by anything that makes you feel worried, nervous or upset like exams, job problems or even excitement, healthy difficulties, etc. once the stressful situation is resolved, the insomnia dies down.

Chronic Insomnia

This type of insomnia lasts just about a month and occurs multiple times a week. Resolving it requires making some lifestyle changes addressing the cause of the stress in your life. There possibly might be some medical reason that are causing the insomnia and you should see a medical professional if that is the case.

Comorbid Insomnia

When sleeping difficulties concur with another health complaint it is considered to be comorbid insomnia. These could be some medical ailments like pain or muscle spasms, back pain, etc. These ailments make it difficult to fall and stay asleep.
