Nutrient of the Month – CoQ10

Oct 21, 2016 | Health Information, Natural Remedies, Nutrient Information, Vitamins

CoQ10 is a naturally occurring enzyme that kick-starts cell activity and helps convert food into energy. It is also a powerful antioxidant. In the body, it is normally found in the energy production centers of the cell.

CoQ10 has been shown to support healthy heart function and can be helpful during recovery from a heart attack or heart failure.

According to the Mayo Clinic, there is good evidence to support the use of CoQ10 for high blood pressure.

Those with certain conditions, including diabetes, high cholesterol, Parkinson’s disease, and heart problems, tend to have low levels of CoQ10.

While the body normally produces CoQ10 on its own, as you age, the body tends to produce less and less.

It is also known that statin drugs tend to reduce the levels of CoQ10 in the body. If you are on a statin drug, you may want to discuss with your doctor supplementing your diet with CoQ10 or eating foods that are rich in this nutrient.

The primary dietary sources of CoQ10 are: oily fish (such as salmon and tuna), organ meats, and whole grains. Beyond food, there are also a number of supplemental forms of CoQ10 on the market.
