An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away

Dec 9, 2014 | Health Information, Health Products

You may be familiar with the expression that eating an apple a day keeps the doctor away. There is growing evidence to justify the health benefits of consuming this shiny, crispy fruit.

An apple is the perfect treat to satisfy your sweet tooth. Packed with phytonutrients (a substance derived from plants, such as a pigment, that is beneficial to health, especially one that is neither a vitamin nor a mineral), apples can help you maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Research indicates that polyphenols (a type of antioxidant) in an apple can have a positive effect on carbohydrate metabolism.

Apples are also an excellent source of the fiber called pectin, which works together with polyphenols and can help reduce triglycerides.

Research suggests that it is best to consume apples in their whole food form. Researchers compared the intake of whole apples to the intake of applesauce and apple juice. They discovered that less hunger and greater satisfaction was reported after consuming the whole apple. Whole apples take longer to chew and eating the skin contributes to a higher fiber intake.

So go ahead and enjoy biting into a great Granny Smith or if you prefer, a mouthwatering Macintosh, whatever kind of apple your taste buds like!
